Great Basin College Profile

Ethan Hawkley
History Instructor

"A little learning is a dangerous thing." — Alexander Pope

Dr. Hawkley was born in the Philippines to an Air-Force family with eight children and was raised right up the road in Boise Idaho. Early in his adult life, he returned to his birthplace for two years where he learned to speak Tagalog, a language he later taught while finishing his degree at Brigham Young University. He then moved to Boston, which he affectionately calls “my town” (even though it is neither his, nor a town), to pursue graduate work in public and world history at Northeastern University. While in graduate school, he was lucky enough to intern in the Audio Visual archives of the JFK Presidential Library and Museum. Rose Kennedy (JFK’s mother) is his favorite Kennedy. He has since taught at institutions of higher learning in Minnesota (Macalester College), Alabama (University of Alabama in Huntsville), Delaware (Wesley College), and China (Sichuan University’s American Center). He also spent a summer studying Islamic history in Hawaii. In his spare time he enjoys hiking, basketball, and writing corny songs on his ukulele.
